China should enhance cooperation with the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (known as TWAS because of its old name, the Third World Academy of Sciences), Bai Chunli, vice president of TWAS, said on Wednesday.

China's scientific community should deepen cooperation on environmental protection, agriculture, education, women's affairs, seismology, tsunamis and desertification with TWAS, said Bai, also vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, during the fourth session of TWAS' Chinese academicians.

The scientist also emphasized that China should cooperate with TWAS in scientific training and scholarly exchanges.

TWAS has 139 Chinese members, including 23 from Taiwan. Over the past 20 years, China has accepted more than 1,000 scientists from developing countries for joint research and donated US$1.1 million to TWAS, according to Bai.
