Chinese migrant workers' demand for entertainment has hardly been satisfied as 60 percent can only kill time by sleeping or chatting, a new report on the country's public cultural service development found.

The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) report found migrant workers didn't have enough entertainment in their spare time after surveying more than 8,000 people in 14 cities.

About 35 percent said they killed time sleeping, while 25 percent chatted with others. It was also found that 15.1 percent played poker or mahjong.

The report also revealed that 15.1 percent read books and newspapers, 9.1 percent surfed the Internet, and only 5.3 percent went to the cinema.

The migrants hoped their employers would provide entertainment facilities, including televisions, reading rooms and computers. They also wanted local governments or communities to provide free or cheap movie tickets, and organize entertainment activities.

In addition, 33.4 percent hoped to receive technical training during their spare time.

However, their demands for computers, movies and entertainment activities had not been fully satisfied as 27.5 percent said their employers failed to provide any entertainment.

"Currently, employers, local governments and communities only provide basic entertainment service for the migrant workers. This should be improved according to their actual needs," the report said.

China's migrant population was estimated at about 140 million. Most came from from rural areas but now worked in cities.
