Studying in the third grade at a nearby Muslim school, Nurul helps her parents wash clothes, clean the floor, look after her younger brother, and make some money with recycled items picked up from piles of garbage that surround the slum in the spare time. Life is hard for her, but Nurul still feels happy when she plays with her friends after school. "I have a lot of friends, Nani, Maya, Koko... they all live here... I don't have many toys, except for a small bike," she said. When being asked about her future, Nurul was a little shy. "I like to go to school and I love math, so I want to be a math teacher." She said. Her parents run a tiny store in Jakarta, but they are not sure about their capability to pay for Nurul's education all the way through. "I love Nurul. She's smart, energetic, and always eager to help others. She always gets good grades at school. I respect her dreams, and I do want her to go to school. For now I'm able to pay for her education, but it's hard to say what it'll be like in the future...", said Nurul's mother. [Xinhua]
