Vice President Emphasizes Traffic, Air Quality, Food Safety During Olympics

China's Vice President Xi Jinping on Thursday urged guaranteeing smooth traffic, sound air quality and sound food safety during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Xi, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, visited two subway lines, Beijing Olympic food safety and environment monitoring centers and the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau Command Center on Thursday afternoon.

He praised the Beijing municipal government's efforts in improving the traffic condition, city environment and food quality.

He urged guaranteeing subway safety and smooth traffic during the Olympics, improving Olympic food safety supervision mechanism and using the latest technology to monitor air quality.

He ordered strengthening efforts in improving environment and air quality and living up to the promise of sound air quality during the Olympics.
