China Reports First Increase in Poverty
China last year recorded the first increase in people living in poverty since the beginning of reform a quarter century ago.

The expanding poverty came about even though China's economy grew by more than nine percent last year.

During the year a total of 800,000 people, mostly farmers, were dragged below the poverty line, which in China is set at an annual income of US$77.
