Deaths From Quakes Total 291
The earthquakes that occurred on the Chinese mainland so far this year have left 291 people dead and 6,700 others injured, said a spokeman for the China Seismological Bureau Thursday.

At a news briefing at the Information Office of the State Council, the spokesman said China has been hit by 27 earthquakes measuring above 5.0 on the Richter scale since the beginning of the year, with 22 on the Chinese mainland. The quakes have caused over 3 billion yuan (US$362 million) in direct economic losses, and affected the lives of 1.74 million people on the mainland.
