Tangjiashan Lake Poses Severe Threat

The Tangjiashan barrier lake, formed by the May 12th quake, is now considered the biggest threat in the area. Engineers and soldiers have been working around the clock to build a drainage sluice to reduce pressure on the lake.

At least 50,000 cubic meters of debris must be removed. Meanwhile, relevant departments have made three emergency evacuation plans. Experts say if a third of the water is released, 158,000 people will have to leave their homes. Half the water will require the relocation of 1.2 million people, and 1.3 million if the lake empties.
