New Home for Affected People

Decontamination work has been completed in seven of the 11 worst hit towns. And in the four remaining towns, the program is about half way completed.

This shelter began taking in victims, soon after the quake, May 12th. There are three meals a day for quake survivors. Fresh water is available from taps around the settlement.

Affected people said, "This makeshift shelter is water-proof. It was raining last night. But we stayed dry."

People in the camps are supplied with newspapers. They watch television. And they are keeping abreast of what's going on in the world outside.

Doctors distribute medicine to help prevent the spread of disease.

Zhang Guiqian from Mianyang Municipal Gov't, Sichuan, said, "Our first goal is to accommodate people, to provide food and water, and to resume classes for students. Secondly, we will organize affected people to help each other. We will rely mainly on ourselves to rebuild our homes. "

People living in the makeshift shelters have organized themselves. Teams have been set up to work for the common good during the difficult transition.
