Japanese Firms, Business Association Donate to China over Quake

The Japanese business section continued to make donations to China on Wednesday, two days after the devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake jolted southwestern China's Sichuan Province and sent shock waves around the country.

Panasonic, the leading Japanese household appliances maker, announced the company's donation of 10 million RMB to aid victims and those areas affected by the major quake.

As an immediate aid to the disaster relief, Panasonic China has already contributed 500,000 RMB to the Red Cross Society of China, officials of the Osaka-headquartered company told Xinhua.

Eisai, a pharmaceutical company, announced 100 million yen (about 7 million RMB) of donations in money and goods. Omron, Sharp and Bridgestone all decided to donate 30 million yen (about 2 million RMB). Toshiba said it will donate 20 million yen (about 1. 4 million RMB).

More than these, the Chinese embassy in Japan has already received 52 million yen (about 3.5 million RMB) of donation from all fields of Japan up to Wednesday evening.

Norio Mudo, president of Riska Co. Ltd, an Ibaraki-based food manufacturer, handed 10 million yen (about 700,000 RMB) in person to Chinese Ambassador to Japan Cui Tiankai.

Yoshio Nakamura, secretary general of Japan's biggest business lobby Japan Business Federation, or Nippon Keidanren, handed the body's donation of 3 million yen (about 200,000 RMB) to Cui.

Nakamura said the money was only the first batch of the federation's donations as it was planning to start collecting more donations among its member companies.

Cui, on behalf of the Chinese government and the Chinese people, expressed gratitude to people from Japan's business field.

"We are deeply moved by friendly Japanese people's good-will actions...the cooperation on quake disaster relief would become one of the earliest down-to-earth contents of the strengthened China-Japan strategic and mutually beneficial relations."
