Polish Olympic Delegation Eyes Medals on Team-sports

Kajetan Broniwski, chef de mission of the Polish Olympic delegation, said on Thursday they could win medals of team-sports at the Beijing Olympics.

"I don't know how many medals we Polish can win," said Broniwski at the flag-raising ceremony in the Olympic Village. "I think rowing, canoe/ kayak, wrestling, weight-lifting, athletics, and judo will be our promising sports to win medals."

"Shooting and team sports, like men and women's volleyball, men's handball may also be our breaking point," said Broniwski.

Broniwski believed that the Beijing Olympic Games would be amazing and very successful. He also thought the opening ceremony on Friday would be the best in history, compared to all the games.

"I think the village is fantastic and I like the weather very much." added Bioniwski.

Poland sent a 367-member delegation to the Beijing Olympiad, including 265 athletes. Poland first appeared in the Olympic Games in 1924 and won 59 gold, 74 silver and 118 bronze medals.

Athletics were their best sport while Irena Szewinska is one of the most successful female track field athletes in Olympic history. She has a personal medal tally of three gold, two silver and two bronze medals across five events. She won silver in the 200m and long jump and gold in the 4x100m in 1964. In Tokyo in 1968 she won the 200m in world record time and finished second in the 100m. Four years later in Munich she finished third in the 200m. She stepped up to the 400m in Montreal and she won her second individual Olympic title, and third gold overall. She ran the 400m semifinals in 1980, her fifth Olympic Games, but was carrying an injury and didn't make the final.
