Death Toll from Northwest China Flood Rises to Nine

Four more bodies have been found after a flash flood in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, bringing the death toll to nine, according to local authorities Friday.

The bodies had been sent to a funeral home in nearby Korla city at about 7:00 PM Friday.

More than 200 rescuers are still searching for two missing people.

The flooding occurred at about 4:00 PM on Wednesday, when a sudden rainstorm hit the Yangxia mining area in Luntai county, in southern Xinjiang's Bayingolin Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture.

Eight of the 19 workers with the Xinjiang bureau of coal geology who were drilling and exploring in the area managed to escape, but the rest disappeared in the floods.
