The Danjiangkou Hydropower Plant is located in Danjiangkou City of Hubei Province. It is the first large hydropower plant in the Hanjiang River, the largest tributary of the Yangtze River. The powerhouse is equipped with 6 generating units each with 150 MW. The first generating unit was put into operation on October 1, 1968 and so did all 6 generating units in October 1973. The design average annual energy output is 3.83 TWh and the maximum annual energy output is up to 5.412 TWh. The electricity is transmitted to Hubei and Henan Provinces through 8 loops of 110 kV outgoing line and 6 loops of 220 kV outgoing line. As a main power plant in the Central China Power Grid, The Danjiangkou Hydropower Plant takes the functions of load peaking, frequency modulation and emergency power supply for the Grid. The Plant began its enlargement works to become a plant at the level of million kW since 1990s. Now technical transformation of No. 2, No. 6 and No. 1 generating units has been completed. The modification work of No. 3 unit will be started in the end of 2000.
The dam for the Plant is of concrete gravity type with a maximum height of 117.0 m, the total concrete volume of 1.2055 million m3. The powerhouse is located at the dam toe.
