Portugal's Algarve region register record overnight stays

Xinhua, February 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

Portugal's southern region of Algarve registered around 16.4 million overnight stays in 2014, according to provisional data revealed on Tuesday by the Tourist Board of Algarve.

The number of nights spent in tourist accommodations has grown continuously since 2009, when 12.9 million overnight stays were registered, according to Portuguese Lusa News Agency.

Desiderio Silva, the president of the Tourist Board of Algarve, said he expected the rise in the number of overnight stays to continue in 2015, but added that it was necessary to continue efforts for that to happen.

The rise in overnight stays in Algarve last year was thanks to British tourists (5.1 million), followed by German tourists (1.5 million), and Dutch tourists (1.3 million).

Algarve recorded 3 million visitors who spent the night in tourist accommodations in August alone, which, according to Silva was a "record number."

Last year the Portuguese National Institute of Statistics (INE) revealed that 2014 was the best year for tourism in Portugal. Endit
